Retrofit Insulation

Retrofit Insulation

There is a growing need in retrofit construction projects to make older homes more energy efficient. One way this is accomplished is through insulation. Insulation can dramatically increase the energy savings in an older home, but there are no guarantees that every retrofit application will return the same benefits.

Wall Retrofits: Why There Are No Guarantees

Every home is different and constructed using various building materials. The extent of your renovation will greatly affect the success of your retrofit insulation installation. For example, if you are able to remove all interior drywall and/or wall coverings, we could treat your installation the same as we would new construction. However, if you are not capable of exposing the entire wall cavity, then we would use a 2" Relton hole saw to drill into each cavity (twice) in order to blow the insulation into the wall. The problem with this is that sometimes insulation may already exist in the wall and there is no guarantee that the cavity will fill completely or evenly.

Other options for retrofit applications are to do the install from the exterior of the building. Maybe you are replacing your siding or are willing to remove the siding. If so, count on our insulation contractors in Muskoka to do the install from the outside of the cavity while the siding is removed.

After the Installation

If your retrofit insulation was installed by drilling holes through the wall, the installation crew will use wooden circular plugs to enclose each hole. Thermo Seal Insulation Systems does not finish the drywall or remove or replace siding. You will need to either do this yourself or hire a subcontractor for assistance. Attic Top-Ups

Another way to retrofit your home's insulation is by topping up your existing attic insulation. While attic insulation is important, many people don't know that it's more important to ensure you have sufficient ventilation. Factors that can affect the cost of attic top-ups are improving ventilation and trampling down existing insulation if additional ventilation is required.
