BetterHomes Huntsville

The Town of Huntsville has launched BetterHomes Huntsville, a $10-million program that helps local homeowners pay for energy-efficient home upgrades — including insulation and air sealing — through low-interest financing and cash incentives. The program is funded through a $2.7-million grant and $5.3-million loan from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund.

What Homeowners Can Get

  • Low-interest loans up to $40,000 (minimum project size $15,000), at a fixed 2.0% interest rate
  • 0% interest financing for income-qualified households
  • Up to $10,000 in additional incentives, based on household income and project scope, applied directly against the loan balance
  • Flexible 10, 15, or 20-year terms, repaid conveniently through the property tax bill, with no penalty for early repayment

Eligible Upgrades

At least 80% of project costs must go toward energy-efficiency improvements, including:

  • Attic, wall, foundation, and basement insulation
  • Air sealing and weather stripping
  • Energy-efficient windows, skylights, and exterior doors
  • Heat pumps (air and ground source) and heat pump water heaters
  • Energy recovery ventilators, solar panels, battery storage, and EV chargers

Up to 20% of costs can also go toward flood prevention, accessibility, and health and safety upgrades.

Who Qualifies

Homeowners in Huntsville whose property is their primary residence and who are current on their property taxes. Detached, semi-detached, townhome, duplex, and triplex owners are all eligible, and landlords may qualify under certain conditions.

Loans are tied to the property, not the homeowner — if the home is sold, the loan and its benefits transfer to the new owner.

Applications are open now, while program funds last.

How it Works

  • Homeowner completes the "Get Started" form at betterhomeshuntsville.ca
  • The Town confirms eligibility (about 10 business days) and an initial energy assessment is completed
  • A retrofit coach helps plan the upgrades
  • Homeowner signs a Property Owner Agreement with the Town and has 12 months to complete the work
  • Financing is disbursed against receipts (up to 50% upfront to cover contractor deposits)
